The most common problems found in dogs during summer is that they get too much exhausted, mouth drooling(dripping dog saliva). Mostly, dogs remain anxious during summers.

And, if you do not care or take such problems seriously, these problems will continue to increase and pose a serious threat to dogs.

Although, some of you may say that, you don’t find any problems in dogs during summers. But your dogs may be susceptible to it in the near future. Therefore, it is better to prevent beforehand rather facing the trouble in the future.

Moreover, you may be worried to be imposed a long list of guidelines and procedures in your busy schedule, as described by other sources. But here, nothing like that.

You do not have to do anything special. And it is obvious that you feed dogs every day. Just, you need to know — what you should and shouldn’t feed your dogs during summer? That’s all!.

This article is basically a summer diet plan for all dog breeds.

1. Continue giving Dog Food:

Continue feeding your dogs(the dog food you feed) as usual. No changes in ingredients. The only thing you have to do is decrease the feeding quantity.

Because, further; as you go through the article, what alternatives should you feed to compensate for the decreased quantity of staple food.

And that will be the main part of this summer diet plan.

2. Add Curd or Buttermilk to Dog Food:

Curd or buttermilk keeps the body temperature stable.

Just soak the dog food with curd or buttermilk. And feed them.

Provide 200 to 250 gm curd/buttermilk in a day mixed with dog food. Applicable for both puppies and adult dogs.

Do not exceed this quantity else it may cause diarrhea.

3. Feed Vegetable Puree with Meat:

In summer, prepare vegetable puree for dogs.

How to prepare vegetable puree?

  1. Boil different types of vegetables collectively in a container until cooked.
  2. Next, grind the entire boiled mixture into a paste with a mixer grinder.
  3. This paste is called vegetable puree.

In summer, do not directly provide meat to dogs. It generates heat and increases body temperature. Boil meat with vegetable puree and then feed your dogs.

And remember! ‘Evening‘ is the best time to feed this dog food. A cool environment is good for feeding meat and eggs.

4. All the Time Availability of Clean & Fresh Water:

Ensure that, your dog is accessible to clean & fresh and cool(not cold after freezing) water all the time. Ensure that the water should not be warm. Take care of this!.

Most importantly, they must drink water before an hour of their feed. It helps digestion.

5. Feed multi-grain thin bread:

Multi-grain includes soybean, sorghum, pearl millet, cornflour, pulses, and wheat.

Make thin bread of this mixture and feed during lunchtime or dinner.

6. Do not feed anything during this time period:

Do not feed your dogs between 11 am (morning) till 5 pm (evening). During this period, your dog should drink as much water as he can.

Feed lunch before 11 am and dinner after 5 pm.

Why?

Digestion generates heat and increases body temperature. And we normally experience a maximum temperature outside. Thus avoid feeding anything during this time period.

7. Provide seasonal Fruits:

Feed your dogs with seasonal fruits in summer like watermelon, musk melon, papaya(boiled), banana, mangoes, etc.

“Breakfast” is the best feeding time.

8. Feed these vegetables in Summer:

Coriander, spinach, pumpkin, carrots, cucumber, cauliflower, green beans, are some of the best-selected vegetables to feed dogs during summers.

Feed this vegetable mixture boiled, not raw. As I always recommend.

9. Avoid giving Fatty foods:

One important thing you should be cautious is that you should avoid providing fatty foods to dogs during summer

Because fatty foods are difficult to digest and consume more energy for digestion.

Further, it increases body temperature. Therefore, avoid giving such dog foods rich in fats.

10. Deworming Treatment or Not – In Summer:

Deworming is a treatment for a worm-free stomach. Should you perform it in summer?

Yes, whether it is summer, winter, or rainy season, or any time; worms develop in dog’s stomach in all seasons.

And dog’s licking habit is the primary reason that accelerates worm growth in the dog’s stomach. Because by licking; dogs may intake some undesirable substances that are not good for their health. Thus, poses the risk of worms.

Therefore, you must perform deworming treatment every 2-3 months interval.

11. Multi-vitamins and Liver Tonic:

It is alright if you are providing multi-vitamins to your dogs.

Most importantly, provide liver tablets to dogs, especially in summer.

When the temperature outside is high, liver tablets control the body temperature of dogs. And also keeps the liver healthy and functioning.

11. Perform Regular Checkups:

Regular health check-ups from a vet shall be an additional safety measure. At least to know the problem and reason.

Whether you find uncommon symptoms or your dogs may need vaccination.

Basically, this diet plan aims at avoiding such dog foods that are difficult to digest and release heat, thus increasing body temperature.

Moreover, you can also alter the above recommendations taking vets advice. Or based on the availability of such foods that may vary from region to region. But the fundamental aim is to avoid heat generating foods.

Lastly, in addition to the recommended dog food, you should provide multi-vitamin, liver tablets, deworming treatment & vaccination to keep your dogs healthy all the time.
